The Soul of Ai

In a ruined world peopled by individuals more or less randomly selected to survive in a place called Harm's Way Island, society is trying to rebuild itself.  Men are outnumbered about 10 to 1, so most households have one husband and several wives.  This makes for interesting social and family dynamics, to say the least! Into this world comes a specialized android, a mechnanny, uniquely constructed with the features of a Chinese woman and designed to care for human children.  Her name was Ai, spelled exactly like the acronym for the soulless artificial intelligence systems that preceded her, but pronounced like the English word ‘Eye.’ In Mandarin, it meant love—a bitter piece of irony for a machine built with cold iron rods and surplus gears.  In this world of mostly women, a childcare android would seem to have no purpose as the average household has more than enough individuals to ride herd on the children.  Also as an android, Ai is not completely trusted with the task she was designed for, so no woman wants Ai to watch HER children.  Yet, Ai possesses a distinct, driving desire to transcend her metal chassis and experience the universe as a female soul.  She desperately desires to follow her programming, acquire a child, and form a family. Through her eyes, the inherent flaws of human society are exposed. As she interacts with individuals that treat artificial intelligence in general and androids specifically, with casual cruelty and systemic abuse, a deeper spiritual convergence begins. When a quiet undercurrent of divine intervention touches the physical world, it fractures her existence. She finds that she possesses something insubstantial that she never dreamed of having.  Ai's journey transforms from a machine's struggle for identity into a profound exploration of what it truly means to exist—proving that both human and android must struggle, fight, and endure to find a genuine soul.
