The World Mender

The World Mender Evan Hale wakes up in a world that isn't his own, half drowned on a muddy riverbank, trapped in a body he barely understands. He has no money, no shelter, no local identity and no time to figure out why he is here. A mysterious System warning gives him nine days before a looming Maintenance event reaches Scarhaven's outer approach. His True Level is 1. The required level is 5. His Anchor Margin is negative, and a critical dependency remains unresolved. **Failure status: UNANCHORED.** The warning tells him what is wrong, but not what it means. It offers no instructions, no convenient quest, and no guarantee that reaching the required level will be enough. Desperate for shelter and answers, Evan follows the road to Scarhaven. At its East Intake Gate, he notices something that should be impossible: an empty position that the official records insist is occupied. To Evan, it looks like a contradiction worth investigating. To the people responsible for the gate, it is a question of protected claims, unseen obligations, and consequences he has no right to ignore. His attempt to test the discrepancy earns him neither admission nor a solution. Instead, it draws him into a tightly controlled process where evidence matters, authority has limits, and even asking the wrong question can carry a cost. With only nine days remaining, Evan must learn how this world measures progress, discover what his warning is actually telling him, and find a way forward without mistaking an incomplete explanation for the truth. Because in a world governed by rules he does not understand, the most dangerous mistake may not be breaking a rule. It may be assuming he knows what the rule means.
