At 02:16 on a Tuesday, every screen in Ethan's datacenter goes gray. Not off. Gray — flat, patient, carrying a document none of them agreed to. The agreement promises hazard schedules, seasonal administration, and a protection mechanism offered once per account. His copy came with an account number nobody assigned him, and three lines of small gray text underneath that no one else on the floor can see. Outside, the city is filling with a global feed of names — AWAKENED, AWAKENED, CASUALTY — all in the same font, all in the same flat tone. The casualty lines are arriving faster every minute. Ethan Cole is a night-shift datacenter tech with four energy drinks, one fire extinguisher, and forty million dollars of other people's hardware under his shoes. He is not a chosen one. He is a man who reads maintenance agreements. He knows that a pre-provisioned account usually means somebody's script fired in the wrong building. And in four years, nothing in his professional life has ever rewarded him for the first click on an unfamiliar dialog. The system, it turns out, is a pre-release build. Half of its parameters were never set. And in the next room, the most important number in the world is waiting to start counting down.
