Shadow over the Sixteen Prefectures Shadow over the Sixteen Prefectures is a historical time-travel epic about war, family, separation, and the long road home. A modern man named Stone suddenly finds himself in the turbulent world of the Sixteen Prefectures, where the borders between kingdoms are constantly shifting and survival depends as much on ordinary people as on emperors and generals. What begins as a struggle to survive gradually becomes a journey across dynasties, continents, and generations. Stone will encounter soldiers, kings, refugees, farmers, merchants, healers, and people who have been separated from their families by war and distance. He will cross paths with people from different times and cultures, sometimes changing history, sometimes simply witnessing it. Some relationships last for years. Others survive only as memories, songs, or stories passed down to people who no longer know where they began. The story eventually travels far beyond the Sixteen Prefectures—to Persia, the Mongol world, and eventually North America, where an encounter with an old Iroquois tradition leads Stone back to a mystery that began more than a thousand years earlier. At its heart, however, this is not a story about changing history. It is a story about living through it. People lose kingdoms, homes, parents, children, lovers, and even their own identities. Yet life continues: people plant crops, raise children, treat wounds, fall in love, argue, travel, sing, and wait for someone to come home. I began writing this story in Chinese back in 2015. At the time, I typed every single word myself, never imagining that it would eventually turn into a three-part epic of roughly 600,000 words. More than a decade later, I am still discovering what some of those early scenes were quietly preparing. A conversation about potatoes. A man who dreams of crossing an unknown continent. An old song. A forgotten name. A village that no longer remembers where one of its traditions came from. Sometimes a story does not reveal what a scene means until hundreds of chapters later. And sometimes, it takes a thousand years.
