April 9, 1945. Kanoya Air Base. Kazuo Nakagawa is nineteen years old. He is a kamikaze pilot. On the tail of his Zero, the number 49 is painted — shiku, death-agony. He is supposed to die for his country today. His engine fails before he reaches the enemy fleet. He crashes into the sea. He is rescued. Japan surrenders. The war ends. Kazuo survives. But survival is not living. And the dead do not stay dead. Pilot 49 is a dark, psychological seinen tragedy about a boy who was supposed to be a weapon, the girl who waited for him, and the slow, inexorable destruction of a survivor who can never come home.
