THE PALACE’S FIXED ASSET Book Title: The Palace's Fixed Asset (Sarayın Demirbaşı) Genre: Historical Comedy / Black Comedy / Novel Themes: Culture Clash, Diplomatic Madness, Stubbornness, and Gastronomic Heritage Introduction (The Dash from Poltava to Bender): In the year 1709, King Charles XII of Sweden suffers a crushing defeat against Russian Tsar Peter the Great at the Battle of Poltava. Refusing to let his charisma and royal dignity slip, Charles tells his generals, "We didn't lose, we are merely performing a rapid, strategic sprint to the east." Taking what remains of his army, he seeks refuge in Bender, a territory of the Ottoman Empire. Adhering to the sacred imperial principle that "a guest is a crown upon our heads," the reigning Sultan, Ahmed III, welcomes the blonde king and his army with a massively generous financial stipend. Body (The Budget Monster and Diplomatic Crises): Charles takes Ottoman hospitality a bit too literally and goes as far as building a miniature Swedish village named "Karlstad" right in the heart of Bender. Over time, the Swedes become hopelessly addicted to Ottoman cuisine, hookahs, and especially Turkish coffee, tearing a massive black hole right through the imperial palace's budget. Charles's endless luxury spending, the aromatic sherbets he imports specifically for his royal horses, and the gilded "Swedish promissory notes" he hands out to local shopkeepers drive the palace accountants in Istanbul completely insane. The palace folk permanently nickname the unbudging king "Demirbaş" (The Fixed Asset). The diplomatic crisis reaches a boiling point during the Prut Campaign. When Grand Vizier Baltacı Mehmed Paşa successfully surrounds the Russians but decides to declare peace instead of obliterating them, Charles charges onto the battlefield in a fury and rips the Grand Vizier's priceless silk robe right down the middle. The clash between the East's calm, "Sit down, child, and have a cold sherbet" attitude and the West's raging, "I will burn Moscow to the ground!" madness spirals into an unyielding war of wills. Turning Point (The Soft Cushion Eviction Operation):When Sultan Ahmed III’s patience finally disintegrates entirely, it triggers the most absurd eviction operation in military history, known to the world as the "Skirmish at Bender" (Kalabalik). Under strict orders from the Sultan that "not a single hair on the King’s head shall be harmed," the Janissaries storm Charles’s barricaded mansion—which he fortified using mattresses and wardrobes. Instead of using real weapons, they charge in armed with giant floor cushions, fluffy duvets, and silk ropes. In the most comfortable and polite melee in history, Charles is wrapped up tightly like a newborn swaddled in cotton, packed away, and exiled to Edirne. Even in Edirne, Charles cannot be stopped; he attempts to sneak into Istanbul disguised as a local liver-kebab street vendor, only to get caught immediately due to his own utter clumsiness.
