One night at Boroitola thana, Moklesh Miah dies in the lockup. For thirty years he has stood in the courts of three thanas and testified for hire, and he has been brought in on a trivial complaint about a stolen goat. The next morning, as the night constable Makbul Hossain signs the attendance book, the sunlight shifts and he is standing in the previous morning. Each time he blocks the method, the method changes, the hand changes, and the death does not. Asking around, he learns that almost everyone at the station is owed something by the dead man. Makbul begins writing names in pencil on the binding of the lockup register, and with every night the price he pays goes up. Only one question stays shut: who killed the man the first time.
