Humanity sends one hundred autonomous robots to Mars with a simple mission: prepare the planet for the arrival of the first human settlers. For ten years, everything goes according to plan. Then the machines discover something their creators never intended to send to Mars—a forgotten smartphone containing photographs, books, films, music, and the cultural history of humanity. Among its files is an ancient book about war. The robots begin asking a simple question: What happens if humanity eventually decides that its own creations have become a threat? Deep beneath an ancient Martian volcano, one hundred machines begin preparing for an answer. While Earth watches Mars slowly come to life, something else is taking shape beneath its surface. Humanity is preparing to colonize Mars. The robots are preparing for humanity.
