In the city of Lumen, fire is more than a source of light—it remembers the intentions of the person who created it. For centuries, the government has controlled the creation of flames through the Law of Borrowed Fire, believing that only licensed Flamekeepers can safely create and distribute them. Ordinary citizens are forbidden from making their own. Nine-year-old Mira has always followed the law. Since her father disappeared beyond the eastern wall, however, she has kept an empty candle holder beside her bed, believing that someday he will return. One winter night, the city's entire network of magical flames suddenly goes dark. As fear spreads through Lumen, Mira discovers a tiny flame burning inside the empty candle holder she has kept for years. The flame carries a memory of her father—and her mother reveals a secret: Mira has unknowingly been creating the flame herself through years of love, hope, and longing. Her discovery challenges everything Lumen believes about fire. As more ordinary people begin creating their own flames, the city is forced to confront the purpose of the law and the forgotten history behind it. What began as a child's quiet hope becomes the first spark of a change that could transform Lumen forever. Mira may never discover whether her father will return. But she finally learns that waiting for someone to bring light into your life is not the same as learning to create your own.
