A young Chinese woman believes she has found love with Alfie Jones, an Englishman living in the British colony. He promises her a different life, far from the future her family has already chosen for her. But Alfie has a secret. In London, he already has a wife and three daughters. When the truth is discovered and she is left pregnant and rejected by her family, what seemed like a private betrayal becomes something much larger. A child is born between two worlds — British and Chinese, yet never fully accepted by either. He grows up in a Singapore divided by race, class, money and colonial power. He works, struggles, and searches for a place where he belongs, carrying the consequences of choices made before he was even born. At twenty-three, desperate for money, he makes a decision of his own. He intends to steal. He does not intend to kill. But one night changes everything. Singapore 1900 is a historical tragedy about betrayal, identity, poverty, family, and the consequences that can pass from one generation to the next.
