by David Cortex
Born on a corporate farming world where the unpleasant is simply the norm, Jace and Milo dream of something better. When a series of increasingly unpleasant events finally forces them to leave home, they set out in search of a place where life might be different. Instead, a chance encounter with a wicked swindler sends them hurtling into space. Their journey takes an even stranger turn when they finally reach their new home, the pirate-run orbital city of Venta Prime, only to discover that the same swindler is waiting for them—a clone of a clone, with an offer that isn't meant to be refused. From there, Jace finds himself drawn into all manner of chaos and madness. Along the way, he becomes part of a crew, meets people who become far more important than he ever expected, and slowly discovers something he thought he'd left behind for good: stability, and perhaps even hope. But there are those with bigger plans. A snobbish, snarky system seems determined to make things difficult, while the peculiar symbiont living in Jace's left cybernetic arm appears to have an odd nature of its own and a seemingly endless desire to be entertained. As the stakes grow, so do the dangers, the opportunities, and the rewards, until Jace, Milo, and an ever-growing cast of characters find themselves facing a mission none of them will ever forget. Life isn't easy in space. But for those willing to take the risk, there may be more waiting out there than they ever dared to hope for.
