Orrin Marsh binds books in a village of four hundred people. He does not fight anything. He has a panel behind his eye that nobody else can see, and it keeps a count. It does not move when he sews a spine, or rules a page, or does the best work in three parishes. It moves when somebody else fills a book he made — and it pays him all at once, for every leaf they wrote, on the day that book stops being theirs. Which means Orrin gets paid when a ledger runs out. When a widow finally writes the last page of the worst week of her life. When an old man hands his logbook to the boy taking over. When somebody dies. He has been a Rough Hand for twenty-four years. He needs five hundred marks to be anything else. And he can name, without thinking about it, every person in this village whose book is nearly full. No dungeons. No combat. No chosen one. A ferryman with fifty-one years on the water and fifty blank leaves he means to fill. A schoolmaster ten leaves from the end of thirty years. An eleven-year-old with two copper and a list of everybody in town. A quiet fantasy about a trade, a village, and a man trying very hard not to want what his own body is counting.
