Three hundred years ago, the developers stopped answering. They had edited reality in public — closed a wall, drained a river, moved a mountain nine feet to the left — and written down every change in a language nobody living can read. The Concordance has worshipped that record ever since. Marrant has spent three years copying it out by hand without being permitted to say a word about what it means. She is twenty-two when she works out what the sacred text actually is. It is not a book of commandments. It is a bug log. And every fix the gods wrote down as incomplete — every apology, every known issue, every “under investigation” — is a hole in the world that is still open. The wall is closed, says the church. The wall is still passable, says the same sentence, four words later. But scripture is finite. There are nine thousand and forty-one notes and there will never be another one. Every miracle spends a little of it. And a hole used in public gets written down — and a hole written down is a hole closed forever. Marrant is going to have to decide what her book is for. A progression fantasy with no stat screens. There is no interface in this world, no floating text, no notifications. Advancement is a rank, an examination, and a page in a register — and every use of power is a line item somebody has to sign. If you like competence, cold prose, and a magic system with an accounting logic, this is for you. Third person, past tense, close on Marrant. Complete first book — 40 chapters, posting in paired installments three times a week, Monday / Wednesday / Friday. Book Two is written.
