The world had already died once. It just hadn't finished falling over yet. Something else knew this, in the way a shadow knows the shape of the thing casting it — not by thought, but by consequence. Where a hundred nations had burned, where the air itself had turned the color of old bruises, where four hundred million people now stood in the wreckage of eight billion — something took notice. It did not think in words. It thought in necessity. This shape will not survive what comes next. Then the shape must change. There was no ceremony to it. No light from the sky, no voice, no chosen one kneeling in a temple somewhere to receive a gift. There was only a slow turning, deep in the marrow of things too small to name, written into every child not yet old enough to understand what was being asked of them — and a single, simple condition attached to it, the only price the change would accept. It would not be given freely. It would only be found the way anything worth surviving for is found: at the exact moment survival stopped being guaranteed. The first sign came from a farm outside a ruined city that no longer had a name anyone agreed on. The barn had been failing for years, propped up by beams older than the girl standing beneath it, and it chose that particular afternoon to finish the job — a groan, a shudder, and then the whole rotted weight of the roof coming down at once, burying her baby brother beneath a beam it had taken four grown men to set in place. She didn't think about her own safety. There wasn't time to. She threw herself over him as the rest of the roof followed, and for one long, airless second, five years old and utterly certain she was about to die alongside him, something in her that had been waiting very patiently answered. She lifted the beam. Four grown men's weight, off her brother, off herself, and did not understand, afterward, why her arms didn't hurt. Her mother screamed. Not in horror. In terror of a very different, much older kind: the terror of watching your child stop being something you understand. It would not be the last time a mother screamed like that. It would, in fact, only be the first. Word of it moved slowly at first, the way all true things moved in a world that had learned, hard, not to trust its own eyes anymore. Then it moved faster. Then it stopped being one farm's story and started being everyone's problem, everyone's miracle, everyone's fear — because a girl who could lift beams was, depending entirely on who was asking, a gift from whatever still deserved to be called God, a weapon no nation could afford to let another nation claim first, or proof that something had gone even more wrong with the world than the war had already managed on its own. Nobody agreed on which. Nobody would, for a very long time. But the change did not wait for agreement. It never had. It only waited for the next child, somewhere, to run out of time — and gave them, in that single unbearable second, exactly enough to survive it.
