Ash Vale was born into declining noble house. House Vale is old, its wealth faded and its influence shrinking. The family name now carries far less weight than it once did. Ash has grown up watching the consequences of that decline and he has no interest in restoring his family's former glory. He simply refuses to let its downfall become his future. When Ash's rare Gravity affinity is discovered, the result is less impressive than it should be. His mana reserves are unusually small, making sustained spellcasting difficult, yet his control and output are exceptional. The score is enough to earn him a place at Aurelius Royal Academy. But Ash has another reason for going. There is an issue with his ability. The more he experiments with Gravity, the more he notices strange disruptions in his senses. Without an understanding of the cause and with House Vale being unhelpful, Aurelius, with its instructors, vast library, talented students, and access to people far beyond the reach of his declining family, may finally give him the opportunity to understand it. For Ash, the academy is not simply a place to become stronger. It is a means to an end. Unfortunately, Aurelius is filled with people who have their own expectations. Noble heirs with family reputation on their shoulders. Royalty moving behind layers of politics. Prodigies aiming for their destined greatness. Commoners clawing to be worth something. And somewhere among them is Ash Vale: a seemingly average noble with a small mana pool, a rare affinity, an inconvenient ability, a good sword, and very little interest in playing the role everyone expects from him.
