THE MAN WHO SURVIVED THE UNSURVIVABLE Kaelen Voss was a normal 22-year-old — three months from graduating, drowning in thesis deadlines, mediocre at parties, unremarkable in every way that mattered. Then Professor Alaric Doyle walked into his apartment wearing a face that wasn't his own anymore, and Kaelen did the only thing he could do to survive the night. He killed him. No one believed the mask. No one believed the voice that wasn't Doyle's. The court called it murder. The judge called it life imprisonment. Kaelen called it the end. He was wrong. Men without names pulled him out of his cell before his first night was even over, and offered him a deal soaked in fine print: become property of an organization that doesn't exist, survive things that shouldn't exist, and maybe — maybe — earn back a life he already lost. He said yes. What else was there to say? They fed him to a god at the gate of Eden itself, expecting nothing left to scrape off the floor. He walked out standing. Now something ancient and nameless lives under his skin, and every monster the Foundation throws at him afterward leaves a little more of it behind — a warning made flesh, a small and furious echo of the thing that guards the end of the world. The Foundation calls it research. Kaelen is starting to suspect he's being groomed for something they're too afraid to say out loud. And somewhere above his pay grade — above everyone's pay grade — a handful of old men in a room he'll never see are quietly running the numbers on one horrifying possibility: What if the apocalypse already has a bodyguard, and nobody bothered to ask if he wanted the job?
