Viraat remembers dying on Earth. He remembers another childhood too. Another family. Another world. Another life that feels just as real as the first. What he does not have is a system, a secret bloodline, an absurd reserve of Spirit, or some forgotten power waiting to awaken. By every measurement that matters, Viraat is ordinary. And he intends to become a Royal Knight anyway. At seventeen, Viraat leaves home with four friends and travels to Avenor for the Crown's six-week service examination — a brutal selection process where swordsmanship is only one part of being judged, every mistake has a cost, and some of the candidates standing beside him are simply more talented than he is. Then comes the tournament. Thirty-two candidates. One bracket. And for the winner, a chance at something far beyond the ordinary Corps: a probationary place with the Hero Vanguard, the elite formation built around Maya — the summoned Hero preparing for a threat most of the kingdom still knows only through distant reports. Viraat wants that place. But this is not a world where wanting something makes you special. He will have to prove he belongs there. A Place in the Ranks is a grounded progression fantasy about reincarnation, competition, friendship, discipline, and earning your place in a world where talent matters — but so does everything you do with what you were given.
