A solo camper heads into a quiet stretch of the Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina, drawn back to an old, little known fire lookout tower he has visited several times before. It is the fall of 2021, and with the pandemic keeping most people indoors, the trail is emptier than ever. After a long hike, he climbs the tower, watches the sunset from the top, then sets up his tent near the treeline below, just as he always does, relying on nothing but a powerful LED lantern for light. Not long after settling in for the night, he hears something strange: a series of loud, deliberate whistles coming from the direction of the tower, the kind used to signal another person rather than to hum a tune. Confused and increasingly uneasy, since the trail should be deserted, he creeps toward the treeline to investigate and spots a motionless figure standing far off near the tower, seemingly staring right back at him. What follows is a slow, tense escalation. The whistling continues. Movement stirs in the darkness behind his campsite. When he finally raises his lantern toward the sound, a silent, motionless figure appears just a few steps away, its shape unsettling in a way he cannot quite explain, present one moment and gone the next. Just as he begins frantically breaking down his camp to leave, a dry, monotone voice calls out from directly behind him in the dark, pleading for help again and again. Every instinct tells him the voice is not what it claims to be. Refusing to turn his light on it, he backs away slowly, gathers only what he can carry, and finally breaks into a run, not stopping until he reaches his car just before sunrise. The story never explains who or what the figure truly was. It offers no resolution, only the narrator's own quiet certainty that whatever stood in the dark that night was not a person in need of rescue, and that shining a light on it directly might have been the last mistake he ever made. Written as a firsthand campfire style horror account, the tale builds its dread through isolation, silence, and the specific vulnerability of being alone in the woods at night, using restraint rather than gore to unsettle the reader, and leaving the true nature of the whistling man entirely to the imagination.
