The Weight of Equilibrium

The world is coming apart.
In the Spire, people call it Saturation.
It begins with a cough, a grey vein, a patch of hardened skin. Then the body slowly becomes something that no longer belongs to the living.
Silas has spent his life working where the Spire sends the people it can afford to lose: deep in its failing machinery, sealing ruptures and crawling through places where one mistake means death.
He knows the rules.
Keep your mask sealed.
Watch your Saturation.
Never enter a Fissure.
And never trust the stories about Epitaphs.
Then a routine job goes wrong.
Buried beneath the Spire, Silas finds something that should not exist. An Epitaph. A strange fragment said to hold a remnant of the world's forgotten laws.
He reaches for it because he has nothing left to lose.
What answers him is not salvation.
It is something black.
Something alive.
Something that does not heal his Saturation, but stops it.
Now Silas carries a power he doesn't understand, a growing connection to something that should not be alive, and a path leading deeper beneath the Spire.
The further he descends, the more he begins to realize that Saturation may not be a disease.
And the world may not be as broken as everyone believes.
It may simply be trying to fix itself.
