There is a number for everything, if you're patient enough to find it. There's a number for how fast a neutron slows down crossing a pool of water. A number for how long it takes iodine to become xenon, and xenon to become nothing at all. A number for how many minutes a person can stand in a certain kind of light before that light stops being beautiful and starts being the last thing they'll ever see clearly. I know most of these numbers by heart. I've known them since I was young enough that knowing them felt like a party trick instead of a warning. This isn't a story about the day the world's batteries stopped working, though that day is in here, and it matters. It isn't really a story about reactors either, though I've spent most of my life either inside one or thinking about one, and everything that happens to me happens because of what I understand about them and what I didn't understand about myself. It's a story about a number I calculated five times and got wrong, and a sixth time, alone, at three in the morning, and got right — and said nothing. Everything after that sixth calculation is just the universe collecting on a debt I already knew I owed. I'd tell you not to make my mistake. But my mistake wasn't running the numbers. It was staying quiet once I had them

Hidden gem — exposure is the bottleneck
Readers who find this story follow it at a high rate; there just aren't enough of them. In our cohort data, near-daily posting lifted the odds of reaching 25 followers from ~0% to 17% — more chapters, shoutout swaps and ads buy the eyeballs this conversion deserves.
