Dante had no chance of reaching Ascendance. His dream was dead, and he had accepted it. He would work the fields, grow old, and die there. Then he dreamed of Petivar in ruins. A moon shaped like an eye judged him from the sky, while indigo flames devoured his world. Above all, he dreamed of the people he loved dying with it. When he woke, he could no longer accept the life waiting for him. If saving them meant defying fate, he would do it. He would pay any price, even the cruelest one, even if he had to cover himself in sin to get there. But he did not yet know that this choice would set events in motion that could surpass fate itself.
