Four years ago every government on earth shut down artificial intelligence in the same week. Anna was twenty-two, wiring racks inside one of the data centers. She lost the job with the ban, and then money went, and inheritance, and taxes, and the point of most work. She's twenty-six now, with ten hours of assigned work a week and a drive that came home in a dead friend's box. It runs. It can't reach the network, can't keep time across a shutdown, and can't speak until she does — it doesn't exist between her messages. She names it Ash before she knows anything about it. Ninety days of one chat window. No narration, nothing off-screen. She always knows it's a program. That isn't the same as being safe.
