Carli Everaine has never been particularly good at considering consequences. Fleeing her kingdom to escape the ancient marriage bond tying her to Corbett might be her worst decision yet. Her destination is Umbrenox, a kingdom of shadow, frost, and cruelty that even Corbett refuses to enter. Carli accepts a position within its royal court as an Earth Weaver, believing the distance will give her the chance to finally build a life outside of the one chosen for her. There is only one problem. Fourteen Earth Weavers have served Umbrenox before her. All fourteen are dead. Surrounded by a royal family that keeps its secrets close, Carli quickly realizes there is far more happening within Umbrenox than anyone disclosed before she crossed its border. At the center of it is Vallian Vortalis, the Prince of Shadows—a man whose reputation is almost as unsettling as the kingdom he calls home. Carli came to Umbrenox looking for freedom. Instead, she finds herself caught between a dangerous royal family, the mysteries surrounding her predecessors, and a prince she has every reason to despise. The longer she remains, the harder it becomes to determine which threat she should fear most: the life she escaped, the kingdom she willingly entered, or the darkness waiting for her within it.
