The Office of Private Services trains men to be Companions. Not escorts. The Handbook is very clear on that, and the Handbook is clear about everything: arrival windows, transport standards, what to do with a client's wedding ring, how long a gaze may rest, which questions a Companion is never permitted to ask. A hundred and forty pages, seven parts, written by one man over eleven years, and not one line of it is theory. Every rule in that document exists because something happened to somebody. Twelve recruits arrive in September for a twelve-month programme. They are given apartments they are told cannot be taken away, a curriculum built entirely out of real engagements, and a single instruction that is also the Office's motto. Be worth the wait. Annie has been the archive for all eleven of those years. She chose the shelving. She cut the tabs. She can produce any file in the building inside ninety seconds, and she logs a particular drawer at 6:41 every evening and writes nothing in the remarks field. There are nine folders in that drawer. She has never been able to write anything on the ninth tab. Every chapter opens with the artifact itself — an actual page of the Handbook, an intake form, a fourteen-day trial agreement, a client satisfaction survey nobody filled in — and then shows you the engagement that made someone write it. Most were written to close a gap. One was written in a single sitting between two and five in the morning, in ink, with an argument about a bridge in the margin, and there is no draft on file, because there was no draft. Fifty-two chapters. Three strands, braided: a training year, an archive of finished engagements, and a library book that came back on a Friday when that book does not come back. The recruits spend the year learning to read people. The woman teaching them the filing system is the only file in that building nobody has opened.
