When the Veil tore open, folklore became flesh. Creatures once confined to fireside tales and whispered warnings flooded Vesperreach. Villages vanished, cities fortified their walls, and humanity discovered that destroying a monster’s body did not always make it stay dead. The broken world came to be known as Anathema. Adelaine was ten when one of those creatures entered her family’s cottage. Fever-bound and too weak to flee, she could only watch as her parents stood between her and a horror they barely understood. When the screaming ended, her home had become a grave and her village had fallen silent. She should not have survived. Three days later, she opened her remaining eye. Years afterward, a different story began travelling between the surviving settlements of Anathema. It told of a solitary hunter clad in scavenged armour—a young woman who willingly entered places everyone else had abandoned. Few had seen her face. None could explain how she killed creatures that refused to remain dead, what she was searching for, or why she disappeared once each hunt was over. The stories agreed on only one thing: Where she passed, Echoes died. They called her the Reaper. But stories had never told the whole truth—and even Adelaine did not yet understand what had survived inside that cottage.
