Jim steps from a burning world into a burning one. The old valley — his valley, a thousand years from now — has sent him back to the year 1026, to the shores of the great river where a civilization has already learned to keep. The Heron people have no iron, no writing, no words for what he knows. They have their own gods, their own wounds, and their own ways of surviving — and they do not need him, and are not convinced they should trust him. Jim owns almost nothing they value: clean water, a way to fight fever, a knowledge of when the sky will go dark. But worth, here, is not what you carry. It is what you do when they stop being afraid of you long enough to test you. This is not a story of one man saving a people. It is the story of a man who lets a people save him back — of a village full of farmers, fishers, shamans and stubborn children who meet him about halfway. Jim is a bridge, not a savior; a builder, not a conqueror. And the only monument he is allowed to raise is one that will have to be re-founded, re-fought, and re-kept again and again — because America does not get remade once. It gets remade by every person willing to keep it. 1000 years change everything except the price of trust. They gave him nothing but the chance to be worth keeping — and that, in the Mississippi Valley of 1026, is the one thing worth dying to earn.
