Six weeks before the most important exam of her career, Freemont PD Sergeant Valentina Rodriguez watches her partner die and the monster that killed him shrug off a full magazine. Then a wisecracking, sword-wielding lunatic appears in a flash of purple and saves her life. His name is Callum Raine. He's a Warden—professional monster hunter and guardian of Ridgemont City, a place Valentina didn't know existed. One where kitsune run police departments, elves use smartphones and pixie crime families run the underworld. Someone sent a golem across the Barrier. It killed her partner. "We don't know who" isn't good enough for Valentina. Someone crossed a line, and she's going to find out who. That’s going to mean braving ogre biker bars, goblin artificers and elf mercenaries. But hey, when you’ve got a hellhound, an assassin and a suicidally reckless Warden in your corner, what have you got to lose? Welcome to Ridgemont. Ready to get weird?
