Fai dies in 2026 and wakes up in Shanghai in 1980, in a parallel timeline, carrying his memories from his previous life, a completely new body, and a superhuman physique. In this 1980, the Soviet Union had swallowed all of China during the Chinese Civil War, becoming powerful enough to stand toe-to-toe with the United States. The two sides are locked in a Cold War, while proxy wars, coups, and crime have become the norm. Technology has also taken a drastically different path: AS mechs dominate battlefields and cities, while bipedal Walkers move through the streets. Cloak Systems can deceive cameras and radar. Phase Transition Armor is impervious to bullets and blades. Fai happens to save seven-year-old Diana, a highly intelligent gene-adjusted child condemned to die. When unrest erupts, he takes her and escapes to Hong Kong—a chaotic city filled with opportunity. Diana has the intelligence.Fai has the strength. But they have nothing, and neither of them is accepted anywhere. So they decided to build their own power base in Hong Kong together: taking one dirty job after another that no one else dares to touch from the whole world, using Fai’s knowledge from the future to seize opportunities before anyone else sees them, using their earnings to establish a company, and using that company to build a conglomerate empire.
