Book one of the Black Sword series follows the path of two people on separate paths: One who has been selected to lead a team to retrieve the black sword that has been stolen, and the other who is coming of age heralded a frightening vision that threatens the world. Shinda Braithwaite an heir to a duchy must lead a disparate group of specialists to try and intercept a mercenary band of minotaurs led by a powerful ogre mage. This is her first time in leading anyone, much less a critically important task group. Avandé Hurtzkrieg is a farm boy born of an unlikely union of a druid and a soldier. His vision that mars an otherwise happy occasion in his life prompts him to apply to the academy to become on officer in the army. His father disapproves but later relents and teaches him how to wield a weapon. With these two stories, the saga of the black sword begins with these two people destined to meet and stop the rise of ancient evil.
