Ground Worth Standing On - Book Two of the Unbroken Three

Ground Worth Standing On - Book Two of the Unbroken Three

Pete Carraway finally has something of his own. That was always going to be the easy part. Six weeks after walking out of Aldwatch with four women, thirty volunteers, and a stretch of unclaimed land that doesn't have a name yet, Pete is learning that founding a hold is less "epic fantasy montage" and more "a genuinely staggering amount of paperwork, with occasional arrows." Between wall-raising, crop rotations, and the small matter of a raider camp holding forty hostages, being a landed lord turns out to require most of the same instincts as fixing someone else's plumbing: show up, don't panic, and figure out the leak before it takes the whole ceiling down. Then Vharenna's own court comes knocking. Ilyra, First Handmaiden to the Queen, arrives to assess exactly how dangerous Pete has become, and doesn't much like what she finds. His fire and wind are just the start. There are threads of power in him nobody's supposed to be able to reach this fast, and every time he proves it, someone else starts wondering what else he might be worth claiming for themselves. That someone turns out to be a queen. Sarienne of Vharenna has a daughter she has spent her entire life protecting from a truth she's never told her, and when Cassia is sent north under a false name to find out exactly what Pete is, "regardless of the cost," it sets off a chain of half-truths, a botched capture attempt in the dark, and a mystery buried under Cassia's own skin that neither of them saw coming. Pete's used to being underestimated. He is not used to a woman's own magic simply failing against him, with no explanation either of them can give. Building something worth defending was supposed to be the hard part. Pete's about to learn it's only the beginning, and the ground he's fought for is about to be tested by an arrival neither he nor anyone at his hold saw coming, one that means the world he thought he understood just got a great deal more complicated. Ground Worth Standing On picks up exactly where survival left off and asks the harder question: what do you actually build once you're finally safe enough to try? Fans of the slow-burn harem politics, the dry Australian wit undercutting genuine stakes, and a hero who keeps choosing kindness even when the whole continent is trying to teach him otherwise will find everything he does raises the stakes on every front, romantic, political, and magical, without ever losing the voice that made him unique to this world.
