Born from an immortal stone on Mount Huaguo, a nameless monkey rises to kingship—then abandons paradise when he learns that even kings must die. His search for freedom from old age carries him across the seas to a hidden immortal master, the secrets of cultivation, the courts of Heaven, and, at last, the perilous pilgrimage that will make him Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. Journey to the West is a sixteenth-century Chinese classic of mythic adventure, spiritual cultivation, divine bureaucracy, combat, comedy, and satire. This new English translation preserves the novel's prose, poems, songs, cosmology, and Chinese cultural structures in readable English. Translated directly from a verified public-domain Chinese source and not based on any existing English translation. AI tools help prepare preliminary drafts; every passage is checked against the Chinese and personally revised through a documented bilingual human-review process for accuracy, intent, terminology, voice, and cultural meaning.
