The Abyss appeared in the early 1980s. No one knows where it came from. No one knows how deep it goes. A fracture in the earth with no measured bottom, it opened without warning and began spilling monsters into a world that had no name for them and no means of stopping them. Humanity should have fallen. Instead, something awakened. Across the world, ordinary people began manifesting abilities that defied every known law of nature. Strength beyond human limits. Senses sharper than any machine. Powers capable of bending fire, space, matter, and worse. They called them Gifts, and those who possessed them became the only thing standing between civilization and the creatures crawling out of the dark. The world changed around them. Ranks were created. Heroes became celebrities. Academies were built to train gifted children. Governments reorganized their armies. Entire industries grew around the Abyss. And beneath it all remained the same truth. The Abyss could never be conquered. For forty years, countless heroes descended into its depths. Some returned as legends. Others never returned at all. Until the largest expedition in history finally reached the bottom. What they found there should have been impossible. The remains of monsters powerful enough to annihilate entire teams covered the ruins of a place no human had ever reached. And among them, they found a boy.
