Babylon, 323 BC. Alexander the Great is dying. His Macedonian soldiers have already come to say goodbye. His generals have begun to imagine a world without him. Orders issued before the fever are already moving across the empire, while rumours of his death travel faster still. Then Alexander wakes. Survival changes everything. But it cannot recall the orders already sent, stop men already marching, or erase the decisions made while everyone expected the king to die. Antipater still governs Macedonia under an order that was meant to bring him east. Craterus is leading more than ten thousand discharged veterans home. Athens is deciding whether uncertainty in Babylon offers a chance to resist Macedonian power. Roxane is pregnant, while Alexander's other royal wives and his adult half-brother make the question of succession far more dangerous than naming a single heir. And the empire itself has become too large for one man to rule simply by appearing wherever a problem begins. Alexander has spent his life learning how to conquer cities, defeat armies, and force kingdoms to submit. Now he faces a problem no battlefield prepared him for: How do you govern a world that takes months to cross? Every order arrives late. Every report describes a situation that may already have changed. Every reform strengthens the empire in one place while threatening someone else's power in another. Generals have ambitions. Cities have grievances. Soldiers want to go home. Dynasties remember what they have lost. And the men closest to Alexander have now experienced something they can never forget: for a few days in Babylon, they had to decide what they would do without him. In another history, Alexander dies in 323 BC and his empire is torn apart by his successors. In this one, Alexander lives. Conquering the world was only the beginning. Now he must discover whether he can build something far harder to create than an empire: a state that does not need Alexander alive every morning. Alexander Lives is Book I of The Alexander Cycle, part of the Alexander Continuum — a historically grounded alternate-history saga of power, war, dynasty, politics, strategy, logistics, cultural collision, and the consequences of changing one of history's most consequential deaths.
