Exiled to the Far North, I Built a Kingdom on Hot Springs

Exiled to the Far North, I Built a Kingdom on Hot Springs

The Crown Prince did not execute George. He did something cheaper — he signed the Far North over to him as a permanent fief, then left him kneeling on the ice in a single shirt with the one windbreak barrel kicked over. The domain came with exactly one resident: an old dwarf, drunk, frostbitten deep enough in places to show bone, dumped in the snow at his feet like a sack of grain. The knights rode off to camp on the lee slope, and promised to come back in the morning to collect the body.George spent his last match on the dwarf instead of on himself. Something noticed.[ Genuine satisfaction detected in a domain resident. ][ Domain Hospitality Management System bound. ][ Current Domain Tier: Settlement Tier (Derelict) — Domain Satisfaction: 1/100 ][ Task reward issued: Geothermal Spring Node conversion plans x1. ]The system pays in geothermal nodes, building plans and unlocked functions — and it will not be gamed. Turn a guest away and there is no reward. Force a sale and the score goes down. Transients count for nothing; only permanent residents who choose to stay move the meter at all. Satisfaction 20 buys public heating optimisation. Satisfaction 100 puts the domain into a stable growth phase. The only currency the system recognises is whether ordinary people genuinely want to be there. So George opens a hot-spring inn on a dead icefield. His first customers are the armoured knights who came back to kill him, and the house rule is posted at the door before they get through it: bathing is ten silver, weapons stay outside, and damage is billed at replacement cost. What follows is not a war. It is refugees who need feeding before they need speeches. A merchant guild that fully expects to set his prices for him. A Revenue Office that rides north with a royal writ for his hot water, and an inspector who moves into the hall and starts auditing whether it is really the books he is auditing. And underneath all of it, a seam of blue ice the Crown wants far more than it ever wanted George alive — which he answers by declaring the core permanently closed to mining and pinning every coin the domain earns to a public wall where anyone can check the arithmetic. He is not trying to conquer the Northern Marches. He is trying to get a hundred cold people through one winter, and then the winter after that. The problem is that the meter keeps climbing, and the system has begun unlocking things nobody asked it for.
