Everyone in the Wildreach starts with the same thing: a six-square-meter cabin and whatever luck they were born with. For most Survivors, the rules are simple enough. Gather during the day. Stay inside after dark. Keep the fire burning. Don’t let whatever is moving in the fog reach your door. Ansel Rooke manages to ruin that arrangement almost immediately. His Unique Trait, Architect’s Wager, takes away his starting cabin and every building material he owns. In return, anything he later gains for construction is multiplied, and the structures he builds can multiply with it. It sounds broken. It also leaves him standing in the wilderness with no shelter when night comes. That should have been the end of it. Instead, the monsters keep coming. Not one or two like everyone else is reporting. Dozens at first, then more, crowding through the fog toward the light of his unfinished Haven. Ansel survives the night by fighting. Then he notices something. Monsters give XP. Their bodies give materials. And for some reason, his corner of the Wildreach has far more of them than anyone else’s. By the second morning, the problem is starting to look a lot like an advantage. While everyone else is trying to make their cabins safe enough to survive the next night, Ansel is already thinking about walls, weapons, workshops, and how much stronger his Haven could become if the monsters keep showing up. Later, when the world map finally reveals where he has been living, the answer is almost ridiculous. His Haven sits right beside a monster spawn. For everyone else, that would be a death sentence. For Ansel Rooke, it might be the best thing that ever happened to him.
