Before the world called him divine, his own uncle called him a problem that hadn't been solved yet. He is born into a cell beneath a river, smuggled out in a flood, and raised by cowherds who have no idea what they're sheltering. He grows up killing monsters that are really assassins, refusing gods that are really tax collectors, and loving the people who will one day watch him walk away from all of them. By the time he is a man, he has already buried a city, built another one out of the sea, and learned that the hardest part of being unkillable is deciding who gets to live. Lila follows Krishna across the full arc of his mortal life — from the dungeons of Mathura to the golden ramparts of Dwarka, from a stolen bride's secret letter to a battlefield where he will not lift a single weapon, only speak. Around him move the people who mistake him for their solution: a king who fears him, a friend who needs him, a queen who out-thinks everyone but him, a warrior who cannot fight until Krishna teaches him what fighting is actually for. And always, underneath the statecraft and the wars and the marriages, the same quiet question — is any of this real to him, or is it all, in the end, just play? Drawn from the Harivamsa, the Bhagavata Purana, and the Mahabharata, and rebuilt as a single continuous story, Lila is a five-volume epic of dharma and pragmatism, love and abandonment, empire-building and the slow, inevitable cost of it — following one impossible man from his first breath to his last, and asking what it costs to spend a lifetime being needed by everyone and known by almost no one. He called it all a play. He never once said it was a small one.
