In the ashen expanse of the Cinderlands, fire is the only scripture left. It offers no salvation, only a stark covenant: tend the flame and it will sustain you; fail, and the dark will claim what remains. This is the doctrine of survival, stripped of all hope. The wanderer Merrell, his skin a map of old burns, travels with a coyote called Dog. He carries little but the memory of a woman who taught him obedience through flame and pain. His path leads him to Crow’s Beak, a rarity, a settlement that still breathes. Behind its walls lies a thriving, desperate ecosystem: markets thick with barter, mines that run on child labor, sacred pyres tended by slavers, and alleyways ruled by gangs answering to a shadow Syndicate. Drawn into the town’s violence, Merrell aligns with fugitives and crosses a gang called the Leather Heads. Meanwhile, whispers spread of a girl named Bathumae who walks through fire unburned, her body immune, her mind filled with visions that men would kill to harness. As factions converge, gangs, fanatics, Syndicate enforcers, Merrell must finally face the truth seeded in him long ago: when keeping the flame alive is all that matters, what acts of cruelty will a person sanctify to survive?
