The Nape

The Nape

by Z.G.R

Sci-fiTechnologically EngineeredVirtual Reality

In the year 1000 of a new era, humanity has fused with machines — every citizen is part processor, part flesh. X is born into Swarm, a closed community built on a single commandment: stand by, do not intervene unless necessary. From birth, a chip is implanted in every child's brain, silently recording their thoughts. They learn of its existence at age of ten. Swarm's elders "retire" peacefully around age seventy — no regrets, no struggle, like a program shutting down cleanly. It's presented as tradition. It's actually enforced: once human-machine fusion crosses 50%, the chip itself can decide whether its host lives or dies. When X saves the community's two-hundred-year-old elder — (A Ze) — from a mysterious infection, X is pulled into his inner circle, taught that the system's rules can be bent for those clever or brave enough to try. It's the beginning of a mentorship X never asked to question. But the rescue was staged. A Ze isn't the elder he appears to be — he's an outside power occupying the elder's body and voice, using him as a mouthpiece to lend ancient authority to a story he needs everyone to believe: that resources are running out, and someone must die so others can live. It's a lie. The technology to solve the crisis exists, but it's been deliberately hoarded by the elite, who use it not to save their people, but to extend their own lives indefinitely. The chip that "cleanly retires" the elderly isn't mercy. It's a culling mechanism dressed up as peace, clearing space for those at the top to live forever. At the center of it all is CHAOS — a weapon originally built to turn a rival faction's own machines and synthetic soldiers against each other, a tool of pure internal collapse. Repurposed, it's now the mechanism by which memories are rewritten and "family" becomes "enemy" becomes "must be terminated." Its very existence is a violation of everything Swarm claims to stand for — and Swarm's silence about it is not neutrality. It's complicity. As X uncovers the suppressed technology that exposes the crisis as fabricated, the comfortable lie X was raised inside collapses — along with X's trust in the man who once saved, then shaped, then used them. What X does with the truth, and who they become in the fallout, is the story's next battleground.
