A dark shounen light novel. Progression fantasy in a cyberpunk apocalypse. 2131. One billion people left out of eight. Satoru Tokiwa was eight years old when the sky tore open above his house and something came through to take his family apart in front of him. Seven years later he walks into the Blood Resonance Trial, the "privileged chosen," as the scions call them. Something ancient offers him power for a price it refuses to name. He pays it. He walks out able to bend time. He also walks out unable to remember why the price hurt so much. THE WORLD: Seventy percent of the planet is Nullgrid, territory nobody has taken back. What's left of humanity survives inside the Five Tethers fortress-nations that hate each other almost as much as they fear what's outside the walls. Neo Kyoto is neon over rubble, surveillance so total it stopped bothering to hide, and a meritocracy that runs on desperation. THE CLIMB: Every Ketsujin is graded one through five. So is every Resonance Armament weapons cut from the corpses of Dread Echoes, bound to a wielder by blood. The Aegis Crucible Academy takes conscripted teenagers for two years and stacks a second hierarchy on top of the first: individual rankings and class rankings, updated publicly, deciding who eats well and who eats at all. Instructors bet on who survives the year. THE COST: Every Ketsujin gets stronger by drawing on the same thing that ended the world. Which raises a question the academy would rather nobody asked out loud: what are they turning into? AND THE GIRL: Someone followed Satoru out of that trial. Mismatched eyes, one of them exactly the shade of his own. She appears in no database on the continent. She insists she belongs to him and cannot explain why. ⚔️ Progression fantasy · dark shounen · cyberpunk Slow-burn romance that isn't an afterthought 📖 Fully illustrated volumes with interior art throughout.
