The Northern regiment expected Hamlin Boyle to fight, kill, and die for a cause he didn't understand. Instead, Hamlin chose a third option: he took a nap in the dirt while everyone else hacked each other to bits. But surviving was the easy part. Night is falling over the Greenwood, a colossal forest ruled by shifting paths and ancient, unpredictable laws. Alone, Hamlin is a dead man. His only hope of escape rests on a bizarre, muttering peasant with a hatchet stuck in his forehead.Plagued by hunger, circling crows, and the nagging suspicion that the forest itself is watching them, Hamlin must forge an uneasy alliance with a man on the brink of death. If Hamlin can keep his companion conscious—and keep his own hands out of the dead soldiers' pockets long enough to move—he might just make it out alive. But the Greenwood doesn't like to let its prizes go.
