Evan Ryker Hale grew up in Japan under another name: Hayato Arashi. Raised inside a powerful martial organization and protected by its leader, Takahiro Kenji, Evan became the most gifted student the organization had produced in generations, mastering martial arts, weapons, awareness, and combat skills long before he reached adulthood. Then Takahiro died. Within hours, Evan was blamed for his murder and the organization turned against him. Before his death, however, Takahiro had prepared an escape: money, travel documents, a hidden bank account, and a sealed letter revealing that Evan still had family in America. At seventeen, Evan fled Japan and arrived at the home of his uncle, Michael Hale, a man who had known him as a baby and believed Evan, his father Daniel, and his mother Naomi were lost forever. Now Evan must learn how to live inside a real family with Michael, Sarah, and their three children, Connor, Lily, and Noah. He has to adjust to ordinary life, school, friendships, family dinners, cousins, and people who care about him for reasons that have nothing to do with how useful or dangerous he can be. For the first time, Evan begins discovering the life that was stolen from him through old photographs, family stories, letters from his parents, home videos, and birthday gifts that continued to be chosen for him long after Daniel and Naomi were gone. The problem is that his past has followed him. The organization believes Evan knows where Takahiro hid information capable of exposing its members, businesses, financial networks, and criminal operations. Evan does not know where it is, though the people hunting him may never believe that. Now he must build a new life while preparing for the moment his old one comes looking for him.
