RESPAWN DENIED: Diary of the Game's Last Living NPC

[SYSTEM: Character continuity check — FAILED] [SYSTEM: Reassigning entity to nearest valid slot...] [SYSTEM: Slot found — MECHANIC, Cinder Reach, UNNAMED] Kael Ardyn was the best player Nexus Star ever produced — the man who soloed the Deep Black Raid, who found exploits nobody else could see, who quit at the top because there was nothing left to beat. He died anyway. Heart, not headset. Real bed, real silence, real end. Ten years later he opens his eyes inside the game's relaunch — not as a player logging in, but as a nameless background Mechanic the system slotted him into like a hole that needed filling. No HUD. No level bar. No one who can see him as anything more than furniture that talks. Everyone but her. Dessa Orrin puts a knife to his throat the first night they meet, convinced the "smith" who fixed her leg in four impossible minutes is either a corporate plant or something considerably more dangerous — and she isn't wrong to be afraid, because Kael is about to become the single most dangerous secret this game has ever hidden. A decade of buried knowledge. A forge nobody else can find. And a growing, inconvenient certainty that the woman who almost killed him on sight is the only person alive worth staying alive for. The studio calls him an anomaly. The players call him the Hollow Smith. Dessa calls him a problem she can't stop returning to. He's just trying to figure out how to keep breathing in a body that technically shouldn't — and how not to lose the one person who ever looked at an NPC and saw a man. System says he's not supposed to exist. She says that's never stopped her from trusting the wrong things before. Extended recognition status: pending. Heart status: also pending. Deletion: not happening — not while she's still fighting for him.
