A Note from the Author The Standing Empire is being stubbed on Royal Road. For personal reasons, I’ve decided to remove the full story from Royal Road. This was not an easy decision, and I’m genuinely grateful to everyone who has read the story, followed along, left comments, shared feedback, or simply given The Standing Empire a chance. The story is not being abandoned. I intend to continue The Standing Empire and Corwen’s journey at a later point. Thank you for being part of the journey so far. Your support and readership have meant more than you probably realize. Until then, thank you for reading. The Ceralt Empire fell nine hundred years ago. Its infrastructure did not. Roads that shorten themselves. Wards that still turn back invaders. Granaries that fill without farmers, and couriers still walking their routes, still delivering sealed dispatches to officials dead nine centuries. A continent lives inside the machinery of a dead empire, farming its output, worshipping it, looting it, and understanding almost none of it. Nobody has the keys. Corwen Ash is not chosen, gifted, or descended from anyone. He is the Undertax-Clerk of Marrow Vale, and he has thirty days to certify his own valley as a failed settlement: one form, three thousand people dissolved into stateless labour. Then he digs out the foundation plate at the foot of the granary and reads it, because the imperial tongue survives in exactly two places, tax law and prayer, and he learned it at nineteen out of a primer he hated. The machine is not broken. It finished a cycle eleven years ago and reduced itself to a holding rate, and it has been requesting authorisation ever since. Politely. Repeatedly. Into an empty room. The Concordance does not check bloodline. It does not check worthiness. It reads the instrument. So Corwen fills one out, correctly. He is the first person in nine hundred years to manage it. Anybody could have. What to expect1. Progression through administrative access rather than levels, every promotion is a dead bureaucratic procedure reconstructed from ruins2. A protagonist whose only weapon is being correct, in a story about the distance between being correct and being right3. Politics with teeth: the merchant league that owns his valley can strike its charter and cannot touch its granary, and there is no form anywhere for what he becomes4. Chapters daily, ~3,500 words
