Six years ago, the Mad King Dren, the World Master, cast a spell called Good Riddance, and New York City stopped being New York City. Manhattan became his kingdom. The Empire State Building became his castle. His enemies became his servants. The outer boroughs became the outlands: savage, feral territory crawling with orcs, dragons, elves, gnomes, griffins, and warring factions straight out of a role-playing game. Worst of all: almost everyone believes it's always been this way. The old world is gone, replaced by a fantasy nightmare nobody but a lucky, or unlucky, few can see for what the cruel veil really is. Noah remembers the mother the spell took from him, the father who abandoned him in the middle of the night to fend for himself, and every shred of the world before Dren rewrote it. Now he survives in the land of Queens with the help of a gnome named Norm, an elf named Saya, and a wily neighbor named Gary who genuinely believes he's a wizard. Gary's convinced Noah's small, mismatched fellowship was chosen for something bigger: breaking the spell, and taking down the World Master himself to save the world from the savage land.
