Built after World War II by The Four Powers, it exists to control shadowplayers: people who manifest supernatural abilities born from trauma. The institutions containing them are elaborate, patient, and certain they know what is best for humanity. Udo Ludis "The Hook" Yukishima is an unkillable player — the only one. He serves his life sentence with Des Cartes by escorting newly-manifested children to the only school for shadowplayers: Strixhollow Institute of Natural Studies. His newest rescue will cost him more than he's prepared to pay. The stage is set. A curtain rises for the next era of shadowplays.
