For a thousand years, Vareth has survived on one bargain. Once a century, a sacrifice descends into the Hollow Stair and gives itself to the Abyss, and the world is spared. Everyone believes this protects them. They're wrong. The sacrifice doesn't hold back monsters. It feeds the Seven Divine Thrones, the false gods ruling Vareth's seven warring kingdoms, whose power grows only as fast as human faith can be harvested to fuel it. Kael Veyron is nineteen, a gravekeeper in the small town of Marrow's Edge, with no reason to think any of this concerns him. He watches the Sacrifice like everyone else, unsettled by the stranger who volunteers for it: an ordinary, forgettable man who walks to his death smiling, as if relieved to finally set something down. When the sky tears above the Stair, Kael assumes it's just the horror sinking in. It isn't. Three days later, digging a grave he doesn't remember starting, he unearths a small black heart, warm and faintly beating, left behind by the sacrifice. He should bury it again. He doesn't. From the moment he picks it up, wrongness creeps into his life: townspeople hesitating before recognizing him, ledger entries for graves that no longer exist, years of overgrowth on plots he dug days ago. Reality is being quietly rewritten around him, and Kael is the one place it keeps failing to take. Seris Ashwyn, a scholar chasing the gaps in Vareth's erased history, recognizes the signs immediately and attaches herself to his problem. Father Aldren, the town priest, has been unraveling since the Sacrifice; pressed, he confesses what he found buried in the chapel's oldest texts. The Sacrifice was never salvation. It was a harvest, dressed in a thousand years of borrowed faith. The heart bonds to Kael directly, awakening the Echo he'd assumed, at nineteen, he was too late to ever manifest. What emerges is the Hollow Echo: a power that doesn't create, but consumes. Every time Kael draws on it, he inherits fragments of whatever he's taken, techniques, but also memories and grief that were never his. His first taste, in Aldren's chapel, leaves him with a stranger's guilt over a death called Marek. It won't be the last debt he collects. Marrow's Edge doesn't stay quiet. Commander Rovan arrives with orders to investigate and a deep suspicion of anything his hounds won't approach, which includes Kael. Their standoff is interrupted by a Void Wolf, sent deliberately, that tests Kael in the woods and nearly kills two of Rovan's men before Kael destroys it, absorbing its memories in a violent, involuntary pull. Whatever sent that creature wasn't hunting the town. It was testing him, which means something above the Order has already noticed the bargain has broken. That fight reshapes the group. Rovan sets aside his suspicion of Kael for the more urgent question of what comes next. Aldren, drowning in guilt, chooses to keep walking beside the boy he handed a terrible truth to. Seris finds in Kael's unraveling living proof that Vareth's history is a construction, and that whoever built it is still maintaining the walls. By the book's end, Kael carries a wolf's memories, a stranger's grief, and a heart that was never his, with no answer yet for who the stranger was or why he was chosen. Leaving Marrow's Edge is no longer optional; staying only makes the next attempt easier to aim. Kael, Seris, Aldren, and Rovan leave heading north on a road none of them trust. Behind them, something far older than the Order has turned its attention toward a small town it should never have needed to notice. The book closes not on triumph, but on four frightened, mismatched people choosing to keep walking anyway, and on a Divine Throne deciding that a gravedigger's boy is no longer beneath its notice.
