The world of mortals has never truly belonged to mortals alone. Beyond their cities and temples lie ancient spirit courts, kingdoms beneath the seas, realms among the clouds, and beings who have walked the earth long before mankind learned to write their names. For centuries, an uneasy balance has kept these worlds apart. Now, that balance is beginning to unravel. Gu Xinglong, Commander of the mysterious Lingguan Si, is a mortal accustomed to dealing with things ordinary men would rather pretend do not exist. But when a series of disturbances draws him deeper into the affairs of the spirit world, he finds himself travelling alongside six unlikely companions: an ancient White Python, a sharp-tongued Green Viper, a Celestial Crane, the Chrysanthemum Lord of Autumn, an ingenious Carp inventor, and a Fox Prince with a talent for getting himself, and everyone around him, into trouble. Together, they become known simply as the Seven. Their journey will carry them across mortal kingdoms and forgotten wildernesses, through celestial courts and spirit realms, where old grudges endure, ancient powers stir, and the line between friend and foe is rarely as simple as it seems. They were never chosen to save the world. They simply kept choosing one another. And when the coming storm finally reaches all living things, ten thousand spirits will have to decide where they stand.
