Fifty years have passed since Amadia’s last saint died, and the world has not ended. It has simply become worse at being managed. Cole Werner, Bishop of Lorne, has spent forty years reaching two conclusions. First: his holy power does not run out. Second: given the same information, nobody has yet managed to make a better decision than he has. Since Amadia would not leave the world without the instrument it needs, and since everyone has evidently been searching for the wrong kind of miracle, Cole arrives at the only reasonable conclusion: He is the new saint. The four archangels are less certain. Unfortunately for them, Cole has already assigned them work. Now a man with no interest in glory, no patience for ceremony, and absolute confidence that most problems can be solved by making the correct decision the first time is heading for the Holy Land with four divine beings in tow. His plans include auditing the Church, rebuilding the paladin system, correcting royal donations, and explaining to several centuries of sacred tradition exactly where it has gone wrong. The world expected its next saint to perform miracles. It got Cole Werner.
