The Forge at the Bottom of the World

Nobody has ever opened the Ancient Door. Nine hundred years of records agree. It is a slab of pale stone set into a black hillside with sheep grazing against it, and in all that time it has done nothing at all. Then, one spring, it stands open. The Adventurers' Guild sends six people to map it — cheap, expendable, and under written orders not to go below the third floor. Lyss goes eleven steps further than she means to. The floor opens like a mouth. She wakes at the bottom of the world with her arm set, her boots mended, and a meal on the table with a cloth laid over it to keep the flies off. There is a man down there. He has a forge, a garden, a cabin built without nails, and a wolf with three tails. He says his name is Fenn. He says he is a blacksmith. He does not say that he was sealed in at sixteen, that the world has had three thousand years to forget him, or that the blades he made as an apprentice now sit behind glass in the great houses of the realm, priceless. He would tell you they were poor work. Nobody has asked him in a very long time. A slow-burn fantasy about craftsmanship, memory, and a world that went on making things without him. No chosen one, no prophecy — just forges, bureaucracy, and a very powerful man whose greatest skill is restraint.
