Lieutenant-Forgedsoul Edran Holt has spent years doing a captain’s work without the rank. He commands Demerain’s Fourth Pike Company, trains raw Kindledsouls into soldiers, and keeps his people alive through discipline, patience, and a talent for command no regulation knows how to measure. Promotion would mean abandoning the city and soldiers he has chosen to serve, so Edran has remained where the army left him: respected, overqualified, and easy to overlook. Marshal-Transcendent Serathyn Aurelain is not easy to overlook. Known across Valdrenne as the War Saint, she is the kingdom’s most decorated marshal, a living strategic weapon, and one of only seven Transcendents in the realm. She has fought wars for the Old King, speaks with the Royal Voice, and now helps his uncertain heir hold a fracturing kingdom together through force, diplomacy, and the occasional threat of annihilation. She also possesses a rarer gift. Serathyn can see the path taking shape within another cultivator. In Edran, she sees what no one else has: the first glimmer of a Silversoul, the promise of a Command Exalt, and an officer who may one day strengthen entire armies simply by standing among them. So the War Saint trades one of her finest Champions to bring an obscure pike lieutenant into her command. For Edran, it is the promotion he stopped expecting and the beginning of a far more dangerous career. He must master the sword, awaken the power sleeping within his soul, and learn to command soldiers whose cultivation and ambitions dwarf those of his old company. Because Serathyn has not chosen him for what he is. She has chosen him for the wars she believes are coming.
